Indian Coast Guard Provides Assistance For Flood Relief Ops In Chennai

Coast Guard deployed three Gemini inflatable boats along with 17 member rescue team to Saidapet police station last night for flood relief operations.The team is presently carrying out relief operations in inundated areas in coordination with Chennai Corporation and Police. All Indian Coast Guard units have been kept on high alert for augmenting rescue and relief efforts.

Chennai and adjoining areas have been flooded due to torrential rains during the last 48 hours and hundreds of people are stranded at many places. The headquarters Coast Guard region East is closely monitoring the situation and will provide all available assistance towards the rescue operations to the state administrations.

The Coast Guard aircraft are also standby at Coast Guard Air Station (Chennai) at Meenambakkam. However as Chennai airport is closed, air dropping of food, water and other relief material could not be undertaken. Coast Guard aircraft will be tasked the moment the aerodrome operation is resumed. All fishermen have been alerted not to venture into sea since 30 Nov 15. Coast Guard Ship Sarang already deployed at sea for providing immediate assistance to stranded fishing boats if any.
