Search For Missing Indian Coast Guard Dornier-CG-791, Still On

The Coast Guard Dornier Aircraft CG-791 deployed for maritime surveillance off the Tamil Nadu coast on 08 Jun 15 had failed to return to the base. A mammoth search operation launched promptly on the same day to locate the missing aircraft and has been further intensified. 15 highly specialised 

Coast Guard and Naval ships and several other patrol boats of Coastal Security Group were involved in the search. Further air sorties by search aircraft of Coast Guard and Navy including the long range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft P 8I for at total duration of 40 hours have been undertaken to locate the missing aircraft and its three crew members. The missing aircraft has not been sighted so far.

To further augment the search and to facilitate subsurface search, two IN ships capable of underwater detection are also being deployed. The search area has been expanded upto 70 Nm into the sea extending from Mahabalipuram to Karikal on the Tamil Nadu coast.

An advisory to fishermen, merchant ships, Coastal Security Group of the Tamil Nadu Police has also been issued to report for sighting of the missing aircraft. The Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau upon request from ICG has activated their information mechanism to sensitize local populace.

Vice Admiral HCS Bisht, AVSM, Director General Indian Coast Guard visited Chennai on 10 Jun to take stock of the situation and oversee the search operation. During his visit, he also met the family members of the crew of the missing aircraft.
