Israel's Rafael Set To Win IAF's SDR Contract

Israel's Rafael is set to bag Indian Air Force (IAF) 's contract for software defined radios (SDR) to be installed in all IAF aircraft in the future. Navy too has shown interest. The pilot project is for 400 SDRs and later around a 1000 SDRs are to be ordered, for this more than a billion dollar contract. These radios would enable all aircraft (transport and fighters) to be connected digitally/electronically.

In February this year the shortlisted candidates were announced, who were IAI and Rafael, who were in competition with BEL and Tata-Rockwell. Rafael was L-1. BEL did not get its Radio and Tata-Rockwell could not meet certain parameters in the RFP, for which they asked for a period of 6 months, which was not granted. To be noted here, that those parameters were not met by the Israeli companies also. The contract was announced 2 years ago.
