Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Bikram Singh who arrived Kolkata on Friday on a three-day visit to Eastern Command, was briefed on the operational preparedness of the Command by Army Commander, Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh on Saturday.

The Army Chief reiterated that the eastern theatre will be given due importance and all issues highlighted by the Army Commander are in keeping with his thrust on development of infrastructures to support the troops deployed in difficult areas.

The COAS also spoke to officers, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO) and Other Ranks (OR) and emphasised on the Army as an organisation being akin to a family where every member must be proud to be a part of the Indian Army.

General Singh emphasised on the status and importance of the JCO, which gives them more responsibility and therefore, makes the more accountable. He also stated that he was happy with the state of morale in the army. He also informed the audience about some of the welfare measures initiated especially for the jawans.

The Army Chief is scheduled to meet nearly 12,000 ex-servicemen during a rally being organised at Barrackpore on Sunday.

"Ex-servicemen must be looked after the organisation because it is these servicemen who have been the bed rock of our Army and committed towards the security of our borders and nation building," Army Chief stated while addressing the gathering comprising officers, JCO and OR in Fort William.
